When Boris Johnson is not bodging up London’s public transport system or his own radio interviews, he can been seen flying across the Thames, from the 02 Arena to the ExCel exhibition centre at the Royal Docks, East London.
Before you start thinking that Boris is donning a super hero costume saving citizens from any evil that befalls, think again. And also breathe a huge sigh of relief.
We’re actually talking about the new Thames Cable Car lanched today by the London Mayor, connecting passengers from the 02 Arena in Greenwich, South-East London to the ExCel exhibition centre in East London.
Named the ‘Emirates Air Line’ and in a strange coincidence, ready just in time for the London 2012 Olympic Games, the service will carry around 2,500 good citizens per hour, according to Transport for London with an and Adult’s fare costing £3.20, and children allowed to hop on for around £1.60.
Of course, not everyone is happy, if a flying box on a piece of string costs London £60 million, old Boris will have a lot to answer for, with many a commuter asking why the money could not have been spent on upgrading the service on London’s Underground tube network. Though the scheme was mostly privately funded, it will be Joe Public covering the costs through taxes and fares, with their current transport costs already stretched.
It remains to be seen just how popular this new addition to London’s skyline will be, though rest assured it will be quite popular with good natured tourists visiting London this August for the Olympic Games. And just to get you in the mood for London 2012 and big shiny things dangling in the air, Boris has only gone and placed the 5 Olympic Rings on the top of Tower Bridge (pictured above).
Whether you love him or hate him, what can’t be denied is that whatever he does, he does with a gaff, which isn’t all bad, as it,gives Londoners something to smile about whilst he keeps coming up with silly ideas.
