HAPPY 60th BIRTHDAY TO JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER!
April 24th, 2012 | Posted by in FashionUnconventional, irreverent, maverick, punk, daring, enfant terrible, these are all words that have been used to describe Jean-Paul Gaultier, one of the most important living fashion designers.
A long time has passed since Jean-Paul Gaultier started sending his sketches to Pierre Cardin in 1970, then a young, untrained and inexperienced – but clearly talented young man, he managed to make enough of an impact to be hired as an assistant. His first individual collection was done in 1976, but it was in 1981 that the style we all know him for was really born. Inspired by the streets more than high fashion, Gaultier started incorporating unusual styles into his catwalks to create a new fashion style.
Icons around the world have worn his garments, from the infamous “Cone Bra” sported by Madonna in the 1990s to the costumes for the film “The Fifth Element” he has been on the forefront of innovation, and continues to do so.
Off the catwalk Gaultier has created perhaps some of the most iconic fragrances, the “Classique” and “Le Male” packages in their instantly recognizable bust shaped bottles.
