KAPOW!! 73 YEARS OF BATMAN
April 25th, 2012 | Posted by in Fashion | Film & TV | Gaming | Lifestyle | YipiiiIt was on the 25th of April 1939 that Detective Comics first published a story about a masked vigilante, a hero with a dark cape that extended like the wings of a bat. It was the birth of one of the world’s most beloved superheros, Batman.
It was in The May 1939 issue of Detective Comics (later to become DC comics) published on this day in 1939 that one of the most famous caped crusaders made his first appearance. Since then Batman has gone on to become one, if not the most important fictional characters to cross between different media.
If the 1930s saw the start of the comic book, and the 1940s the first film, it was the 1960s that saw the rise of the KAPOW! hugely successful Batman TV show starring Adam West. After a quiet time in the 1970s, leaving room for the Superman films, it was Tim Burton who resuscitated the character in film with his darkly glorious Batman in 1989 featuring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. The 1990s saw many other Batman films, who veered more towards the idiotic than the serious, until Christopher Nolan brought the Dark Knight back in 2005 with his Batman Begins.
Since then the Batman myth is seen in new light, and if it once was aimed at children it now has a new aura of “cool”, thanks to Heath Ledger’s phenomenal final performance as the Joker. 2012 sees the 73 year old character embark in a new adventure in the widely anticipated The Dark Knight Rises, released this summer.
